Vishing: A New Threat
You've heard of phishing and spoofing, where identity thieves use fake emails and websites to steal personal information.
However, thieves are also using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to make anonymous telephone calls in an attempt to steal information. This crime is known as "vishing."
Below are some tips to protect yourself:
- If you receive a phone call asking you to confirm, update, or verify credit card account information, hang up immediately. Call the customer service number on the back of your card or statement to find out if the call was legitimate.
- Never provide the three-digit security code on the back of your card unless you made the call, using the customer service number from your card or statement.
- VoIP can be used to make fake numbers show up on Caller ID. Even if the number is local or looks legitimate, be suspicious of any caller who asks you to confirm, verify or update account information.
- Always use the toll-free number on your card or statement. Never use the number provided by a caller or given in an email.
- Be suspicious of any caller who does not address you by your name.
- Report vishing attempts to your credit card provider as soon as possible.
